MIDEM is the place where the music industry – or what is left – meets in January. I was thinking about going there. And here is the story …
Years ago I use to attend MIDEM as an exhibitor. And this came back to me like a sledgehammer! The German MIDEM office told me: There is no way of getting you into MIDEM as a journalist (I do have an international press card), because you have been exhibitor!
I thought a while about this … and then – with a little help from an insider – I decided to write an email to Paul Zilk, CEO of Reed MIDEM and ask him, why they treat the press like this. He connected me to Mike Williams, Director of Press and Public Relations at MIDEM. And he topped everything by telling me:“We are currently reviewing our policy regarding people who write for blogs. Today, MIDEM accredits a very small number of bloggers (2 people) who devote their blog entirely to the music industry and where our industry contacts inform us that the blog is widely read by music professionals. Your blog, which looks great, clearly covers a wide range of subjects and is not specifically about music.”Receiving this answer and searching on the internet what they are doing, I really wonder if these people aren’t aware of what is going on. Haven’t they heard of
- emerging markets?
- connecting networks?
- serving the “long tail”?
- social network tools?
They are acting like the music industry itself! Good luck!
