Time Is Passing By … 20 Years Ago …

… I had my first email account: ulrike@thewell.com.
These days I was living in Sausalito, right across the Golden Gate Bridge and also right above the legendary “The Well”.

I remember to turn on my IBM computer, typing in endless lines of text until finally the modem started to dial in … I had to pick up my mail in a “digital” mailbox … no pictures, no attachments, no nothing … I had no idea where all this would lead to … I just had a feeling it’s going to be a real big thing … People like Kevin Kelly, Stuart Brand (who founded 1974 The Whole Earth Review), Michael Naimark, Howard Rheingold and others hang out there. I was a garage … nothing but a garage. Once in a while I went there and just watched the geeks (that’s what you would call them today) and I was wondering how the “controlled” their keyboards …

The Well shared the office with the Whole Earth Review. Whole Earth Review’s motto was Access to tools and ideas (as was the motto of the Catalog), with “tools” being very broadly defined, so as to include maps, books, software, and other extensions of the mind. It was one of the journals that, in effect, bridged the gap of what has been called the two cultures (C.P. Snow, science and the humanities).

A very exciting time …
and honestly … I didn’t have a clue what was happening …
